There’s a lot you need to take care before you move, but don’t forget one important thing: updating your address. This includes subscriptions, important documents, or simply informing family and friends. Although this seems like a mindless step, you would be surprised how many people forget!
We’ve come up with a master list to make sure you don’t run into any problems.
Don’t Forget Your Change of Address Checklist
1. Utilities
You don’t want to walk into your new beautiful home with no electricity! Update your change of address with your utility provider for move in day. Schedule shut-off at your old address for the end of moving day, that way you’re still able to turn on lights and use the bathroom.
2. Post Office
Once you notify the post office of your address change any mail sent to your old address will be automatically forwarded to your new address for 12 months. We recommend doing this one week prior to moving in. You can set this up online to take effect by a specific date!
3. Your Insurance Provider and Doctors Office
It is important to update your address with any of your insurance providers including, health, dental, car and life insurances. Make sure to update your address at your primary doctor and any specialty offices you visit. If you are relocating, your doctor may give you a referral to visit a new practice in your neighborhood.
4. Your Bank and Credit Card Companies
Check to see if you can change your address online for your bank and credit card companies, if not give them a quick call. Don’t forget about any loyalty programs with specific stores you may have to change.
5. Subscriptions and Online Shopping Sites
Start with the stores you find yourself frequently ordering from like Amazon. Then go into your subscription accounts like Netflix, Hulu and Spotify to update your information.
6. Friends and Family
This one seems like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how many people forget this small step! Send out a group text or email informing everyone of your new address. They’ll thank you for it later.
